AGN’s UV and X-ray luminosities in clumpy accretion flows

چکیده
We consider the fuelling of the central massive black hole in Active Galactic Nuclei, through an inhomogeneous accretion flow. Performing simple analytical treatments, we show that shocks between elements (clumps) forming the accretion flow may account for the UV and X-ray emission in AGNs. In this picture, a cascade of shocks is expected, where optically thick shocks give rise to optical/UV emission, while optically thin shocks give rise to X-ray emission. The resulting blue bump temperature is found to be quite similar in different AGNs. We obtain that the ratio of X-ray luminosity to UV luminosity is smaller than unity, and that this ratio is smaller in massive objects compared to less massive sources. This is in agreement with the observed LX/LUV ratio and suggests a possible interpretation of the αOX − lUV anticorrelation.

X-ray variability time scales in Active Galactic Nuclei
X-ray variability in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is commonly analysed in terms of the Power Spectral Density (PSD). The break observed in the power spectrum can be interpreted as a characteristic X-ray variability time scale. Here we study variability properties within the framework of clumpy accretion flows, in which shocks between accreting elements account for the UV and X-ray emissions. We...
متن کاملCosmological Evolution of Quasars
We present a model for the cosmological evolution of quasars (QSOs) under the assumption that they are powered by massive accreting black holes. Accretion flows around massive black holes make a transition from high radiative efficiency (∼ 10%) to low efficiency, advection-dominated flows when Ṁ/ṀEdd falls below the critical rate ∼ 0.3α2 ∼ 10−2 where Ṁ is the mass accretion rate, ṀEdd ∝ M is th...
متن کاملLow-Luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei: Are They UV-Faint and Radio Loud?
Low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are perceived to be radio loud and devoid of a “big blue bump”, indicating a transition from a radiatively efficient, geometrically thin, accretion disc in high-luminosity AGNs, to a geometrically thick, radiatively inefficient accretion flow at low luminosities and accretion rates. I revisit the issue of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of l...
متن کاملOn the “failure” of the Standard Model for Galactic Black Holes in Quiescence
It is currently believed that the “standard” accretion disk theory under-predicts the observed X-ray luminosity from Soft X-ray Transients (SXT) in quiescence by as much as 4 to 6 orders of magnitude. This “documented” failure of the standard model is considered to be one of the strongest arguments for the existence of the Advection Dominated Accretion Flows (ADAF) in Astrophysics, since these ...

It is currently believed that the “standard” accretion disk theory under-predicts the observed X-ray luminosity from Soft X-ray Transients (SXT) in quiescence by as much as 4 to 6 orders of magnitude. This failure of the standard model is considered to be an important argument for the existence of the alternative mode of accretion – Advection Dominated Accretion Flows (ADAF) in astrophysics, si...
